jacksonville, FL – As the Jacksonville Jaguars continue their intensive training camp, one player is making waves by embracing a unique and demanding role: learning both offense and defence. Safety Antonio Johnson, affectionately known as “Hunter,” is meticulously working to master both sides of the ball, a challenge he acknowledges is as much mental as it is physical.
A Strategic Approach to a Complex Task
hunter’s journey into this dual-threat capacity is a deliberate strategy by the Jaguars coaching staff, aimed at maximizing his versatility without overwhelming him. Head coach Liam Coen emphasized the phased approach, stating, “We will [have days when he flip-flops]. I just have to get to that point to where I understand both sides instantly.” This measured introduction allows Hunter to build a solid foundation on each side of the ball before integrating them within the same practice sessions.
“I need to be able to process everything fast, quick,” hunter explained. “When I’m on the defensive side, if the offense changes their strength, I’ve got to know what I’m doing right away. and if the offense changes the play, I got to know what I’m doing right away. So I like that we’re starting off slow, getting me adjusted, making sure I know where I need to be on one side of the ball each day and then it [will] all come together.”
This methodical process is designed to prevent the mental fatigue that can accompany learning two distinct playbooks. Hunter, who previously showcased his adaptability at Colorado, is finding the mental aspect to be the primary hurdle. “You’ve got two playbooks and you’ve got to do diffrent terms each and every day,” he noted.
Handling the Workload with Poise
Despite the inherent complexity, Hunter is reportedly handling the increased workload with remarkable composure. Coach Coen praised Hunter’s attitude and adaptability, stating,”It’s probably harder — I mentioned this before — logistically for us as coaches to navigate it and make sure that we’re making use of all his time. I think it doesn’t bother him as much. He’s pretty unfazed by some of this stuff. … He’s been grate in terms of his attitude and just kind of the way he approaches it.”
Hunter’s commitment is evident in his dedication during practice. On Friday,he participated in 23 snaps during 11-on-11 and 7-on-7 drills. While he had a brief matchup against receiver brian Thomas Jr., quarterbacks Trevor Lawrence and Nick Mullens did not appear to target him directly on any throws during that period.
“I enjoyed it, but I just needed to be on the field a lot more so I can continue to learn the defense and continue to do what I need to do,” Hunter expressed, highlighting his eagerness to absorb more reps and knowledge.
A Complete training Regimen
Hunter’s training schedule is as unique as his role. On days dedicated to offense, he spends special teams periods working with secondary coach Ron Milus and defensive backs coach Anthony Perkins. Conversely,on defensive days,he collaborates with receivers coach Edgar Bennett and assistant receivers coach Tyler Tettleton during those same periods. This cross-training ensures he receives specialized coaching from both offensive and defensive staffs, reinforcing his understanding of the game from multiple perspectives.
The mental fortitude required to switch between offensive and defensive terminology and strategies daily is notable.Hunter’s ability to manage this cognitive load is a testament to his dedication and the structured approach implemented by the Jaguars’ coaching staff. As training camp progresses, the expectation is that Hunter will continue to integrate his offensive and defensive knowledge, becoming an increasingly valuable and versatile asset for the team.
