‘Dangerous Animals’ Premiere: Jai courtney Dives Into Serial Killer Mind
Updated May 28, 2025
Nearly 50 years after “Jaws” instilled a fear of sharks, director Sean Byrne’s new horror film, “Dangerous Animals,” seeks
to shift the focus to a more terrifying predator: the serial killer. the film stars Jai Courtney as Tucker, a charming but
brutal serial killer who uses the ocean as his hunting ground.
at the Los Angeles premiere of “Dangerous Animals” at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood, the cast and crew praised sharks,
even after a real-life shark attack during the Australian/Canadian/American co-production. Courtney revealed that a shark
nipped a cameraman’s snorkeling fin while he was riding a Jet Ski.
To ensure safety, the crew used an underwater barrier for open ocean scenes and pools for close-ups. cast and crew members
expressed that they are more afraid of serial killers than sharks after making the movie. Byrne emphasized that the film
aims to correct the misrepresentation of sharks, stating,”Man’s the monster, shark’s not the monster.”

“Dangerous Animals” also explores a love story between Zephyr, played by Hassie Harrison, and Moses, played by Josh Heuston.
Thier chemistry adds depth to the film, heightening the tension.
Harrison, known for “Yellowstone” and “Tacoma FD,” noted that the film’s premiere at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival made the
challenging night shoots worthwhile. “It is scary, it is hard, it is cold,” Harrison said. “This is such a cool movie in
that it makes the audience ask, ‘What is scarier?'”
Heuston, who also stars in “Heartbreak High” and “Dune: Prophecy,” shared his pride in representing australia on the
international stage. “I feel like every little kid dreams of something like [Cannes],” Heuston said. “I’m a big advocate for
Australian film and television, so to get that possibility to put it on the world’s stage was unbelievable.”
Courtney added, “It really was quite special for us, the reception was so positive. It was so cool to have a flood of energy
around the film, especially for one that’s a little unexpected for the festival.”
Courtney shared his interest with serial killers: “I’ve never been afraid of serial killers, I’m actually fascinated by
them. I listen to a lot of true crime, so getting into the mind of this guy was not the tricky part. I kind of live there,
weirdly. Just as these characters in society intrigue me — it’s a strange thing to consider that we engage with folks
all the time who are capable of really atrocious things, that we’ll never know.”
the premiere featured a red carpet, shark-diving photo opportunities, themed cocktails, and appetizers. Notable guests
included Marco Calvani, shannon Purser, Max Ehrich, Scarlett DeMeo, and Dina Shihabi.
