Jair Bolsonaro Indicted for 2022 Coup Attempt: Key Details and Implications

Brazil’s Former President Jair Bolsonaro Indicted for Coup Attempt

Brazil’s federal police have accused former President Jair Bolsonaro of trying to stage a coup in 2022 to remain in power after losing the election to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The police have also indicted 36 others involved in what they describe as a criminal conspiracy aimed at keeping Bolsonaro in office.

The conspiracy included Bolsonaro’s former defense minister, who was also his vice-presidential candidate, along with several close aides. A nearly 900-page report classifies this coup attempt as an effort to “violently dismantle the constitutional state.”

This report has been submitted to Brazil’s Supreme Court, where it will be referred to the attorney general. The attorney general will determine if there is enough evidence to prosecute Bolsonaro.

On January 8, 2023, shortly after Lula took office, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters stormed significant government buildings in Brasília, including the presidential palace and the Supreme Court.

Among those implicated in the alleged conspiracy are several former officials from Bolsonaro’s administration, including former Defense Minister Walter Braga Netto and former Justice Minister Anderson Torres. On Tuesday, authorities arrested four military members, including a close aide to Bolsonaro, for allegedly planning an assassination. They sought to create a federal emergency enabling Bolsonaro to declare a “state of siege” and maintain power.

If convicted for attempting a coup and criminal association, Bolsonaro may face significant prison time. He has denied all charges, claiming political persecution.

This situation remains fluid, and updates will follow.
