Milan – Jair da Costa, the Brazilian winger who starred for Inter Milan during their “Grande Inter” era, has died. He was 84.
Da Costa, born in Santo André, Brazil, on July 9, 1940, began his career with Portuguesa before joining Inter Milan in 1962. He made 119 appearances and scored 39 goals for the Nerazzurri in his first stint with the club.
A key player, da Costa scored 10 goals that season, contributing to Inter’s Serie A title win. His first goal came just two minutes into his debut against Genoa.
During his time with “Grande Inter,” da Costa won three Serie A titles, two European Cups (now Champions League), and two Intercontinental Cups (1964 and 1965). Inter Milan released a statement expressing their condolences. “FC Internazionale Milano and the entire Inter world extend their deepest sympathies for the passing of Jair da Costa and embrace his family in remembrance,” the statement read.
The club statement further noted that, “Talent, speed, and class made Jair a Nerazzurri legend. Number 7 of the great Inter, he was unstoppable on the right wing: with his accelerations and his inspiration he was able to ignite San Siro and lead his teammates to the most memorable triumphs.”
Inter Milan highlighted da costa’s nine seasons with the club, from 1962 to 1972, and his role in the 1966 Serie A title and the 1965 European Cup victory, sealed by his decisive goal against Benfica.
