OWINGS MILLS, Md. — Cornerback Jaire Alexander is heading to the Baltimore Ravens on a one-year contract worth up to $6 million.The deal, which includes $2 million in incentives, fulfills a request from Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson, according to sources.
Alexander’s arrival gives the Ravens a potentially dominant secondary and reunites him with Jackson; the two where teammates at Louisville from 2015-2017. Jackson had publicly lobbied for the signing after a recent minicamp practice. “Go get him, Eric,” Jackson said, referring to Ravens General Manager Eric DeCosta.
The Ravens posted a video on social media showing Jackson and Alexander celebrating the signing with a hug and high-five.Alexander,28,was released by the Green Bay Packers on June 9 after several injury-plagued seasons. He was an All-Pro selection in both 2020 and 2022 but has played in only 34 of 68 possible games as 2021. He was due to make $17.5 million this season, none of it guaranteed.
If Alexander stays healthy, he will join a talented defensive backfield that already includes first-round picks Marlon Humphrey, Nate wiggins, Kyle Hamilton, and Malaki Starks. The Ravens struggled against the pass last season, ranking 31st in the NFL with 244.1 yards allowed per game. The team has taken steps to address this weakness, including hiring Chuck Pagano as senior secondary coach, drafting Starks, and now signing Alexander to improve their pass defense and secondary talent.
Alexander, the 18th overall pick in the 2018 draft, has recorded 287 tackles, 12 interceptions, and 70 passes defended in his career.
