Busy Commuter Rail Station Faces Closure, Sparking Rider Backlash

Jakarta, Indonesia – A bustling commuter rail station in Indonesia’s capital city is facing potential closure, igniting concerns and pushback from regular riders who rely on it for their daily commutes.

KAI Commuter, the operator of Jakarta’s commuter rail network, is considering shutting down Stasiun Karet, citing safety concerns and traffic congestion. The station’s location near a busy intersection poses a risk to passengers, especially given the station’s high volume of traffic, according to KAI commuter VP Corporate Secretary Joni Martinus.

“Safety is our top priority,” Martinus said. “With 12-car trains stopping at Stasiun Karet, the station’s proximity to the intersection creates a bottleneck and raises safety concerns.”

Nearly 2,000 commuters pass through Stasiun Karet every hour, with trains arriving every 10 minutes. The station’s waiting area, designed for only 150 people, struggles to accommodate the influx of passengers, leading to overcrowding.

To address these issues, KAI Commuter proposes merging Stasiun Karet with the nearby Stasiun BNI city, located just 350 meters away.

“Stasiun BNI City has a larger capacity and is well-connected to other transportation options,” Martinus explained. “This move would ensure a safer and more comfortable experience for our passengers.”

However, the proposed closure has been met with resistance from some commuters who rely on Stasiun Karet for their daily commute.

“I disagree with the closure,” said 23-year-old commuter hamidah. “My workplace is near Thamrin, and if Stasiun Karet closes, I’ll have to walk much further.”

The final decision on Stasiun karet’s fate remains pending, with KAI commuter continuing discussions with the Directorate General of Railways.

The potential closure of Stasiun Karet highlights the delicate balance between ensuring passenger safety and maintaining convenient access to public transportation in a bustling metropolis like Jakarta.

stasiun Karet: To Close or Not to Close?

Rina: Did you hear about the commotion surrounding Stasiun Karet?

Ethan: Not realy, what’s going on?

rina: Apparently, KAI Commuter is thinking about closing it down!

Ethan: Wow, seriously? Why would they do that?

Rina: They say it’s as of safety concerns. The station is right next to a busy intersection, and with so many people using it every day, it’s created a bottleneck. They’re worried about accidents.

Ethan: That makes sense. It is pretty crowded there during rush hour.

Rina: Exactly. They’re saying over 2,000 passengers use it every hour, but the waiting area is barely big enough to hold 150!

Ethan: So, what are they planning to do?

Rina: They want to merge Stasiun Karet with Stasiun BNI City, which is just a short walk away. They say it’s a bigger station and better connected.

Ethan: That might make sense from a safety standpoint. But what about the people who rely on Stasiun Karet?

Rina: That’s exactly what some commuters are worried about. They say stasiun BNI City is further from their workplaces and will make their commutes longer and more inconvenient.

Ethan: I can see how that would be frustrating. Have they made a final decision?

Rina: Not yet. Apparently, KAI Commuter is still talking things over with the Directorate General of Railways. It’s going to be interesting to see what they decide.
