Food prices in the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, exhibited a mixed trend on February 19, 2026, with some commodities experiencing price increases while others saw declines, according to data from the Ministry of Trade’s Basic Needs Market Monitoring System (SP2KP Kemendag). The fluctuations come as Indonesia prepares for the observance of both Ramadan, estimated to begin on February 18, 2026, and the Chinese New Year, which was celebrated on February 17, 2026.

Out of 16 commodities monitored, three registered price increases: shallots, curly red chili, and large red chili. Conversely, four commodities saw price decreases: red bird’s eye chili, broiler eggs, premium packaged palm cooking oil, and beef rump. The remaining nine commodities maintained stable prices.

The most significant price increase was observed in curly red chili, rising by Rp2,041 (3.8%) to reach Rp55,708 per kilogram. This increase follows a broader trend of rising red chili prices noted earlier in the month, with data from February 17, 2026, showing a continued upward trajectory. Conversely, premium packaged palm cooking oil experienced the sharpest decline, falling by Rp333 (1.5%) to Rp21,896 per liter.

As of February 19, 2026, at 18:01 WIB, the price of beef rump decreased by 0.44% to Rp142,639 per kilogram. Red bird’s eye chili saw a slight decrease of 0.2% to Rp103,333 per kilogram. Broiler eggs also experienced a marginal decline, falling by 0.39% to Rp31,625 per kilogram.

Other notable price movements included stable prices for broiler chicken meat at Rp42,125 per kilogram and Honan garlic at Rp40,611 per kilogram. Bulk palm cooking oil remained unchanged at Rp19,813 per liter, as did bulk granulated sugar at Rp18,417 per kilogram. Prices for premium rice (Rp16,068 per kilogram), Minyakita (Rp15,700 per liter), imported soybeans (Rp14,600 per kilogram), medium rice (Rp14,032 per kilogram), and wheat flour (Rp12,000 per kilogram) also remained stable.

The price fluctuations occur against a backdrop of government assurances regarding food security ahead of the upcoming religious holidays. On February 3, 2026, Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung stated that the provincial government is actively coordinating with food suppliers from across Indonesia to ensure adequate supply and price stability during Chinese New Year, Ramadan, and Eid al-Fitr. This proactive approach aims to prevent potential food shortages and price hikes during periods of increased demand.

The Governor’s assurances echo concerns raised by Statistics Indonesia (BPS), which has historically observed inflationary trends at the beginning of Ramadan. Deputy for Statistics of Distribution and Services, Pudji Ismartini, has noted that the food, beverage, and tobacco group consistently contributes the most to inflation leading up to Eid al-Fitr. This historical pattern underscores the importance of proactive measures to manage supply and demand during these critical periods.

The Indonesian government’s focus on maintaining food security extends beyond Jakarta. Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman has also pledged to secure national food stocks for the Eid al-Fitr holidays, signaling a nationwide effort to stabilize prices and ensure availability of essential commodities. This commitment is particularly crucial given the potential for disruptions caused by recent disasters in Sumatra, which Bank Indonesia has warned may trim economic growth.

The observed price movements – a mix of increases and decreases – reflect typical seasonal patterns in Indonesia, where demand for certain commodities rises ahead of major holidays while others experience adjustments due to market forces. The continued monitoring of these price trends by the Ministry of Trade and the proactive measures taken by the government are aimed at mitigating potential disruptions and ensuring food affordability for Indonesian consumers during this important period.
