Jakarta experienced a sudden power outage on Thursday night, April 9, 2026, disrupting electricity supply across several areas including Central, North, and West Jakarta, according to PLN’s main distribution unit (UID) in Jakarta.
The blackout was triggered by electrical supply issues originating from several substations, as confirmed by Haris Andika, Senior Manager of Communication and Public Relations at PLN, in a written release on April 9, 2026.
As of 8:00 p.m., the outage persisted in the Angke sub-district of North Jakarta and its surrounding neighborhoods, with PLN working to gradually normalize the grid and provide ongoing updates to the public.
The power failure significantly impacted transportation services, with city-owned mass transit operator PT MRT Jakarta reporting operational disruptions at several stations starting from 5:57 p.m. Due to power supply constraints on PLN’s side.
Key facilities at MRT stations, including lighting, lifts, and escalators, were temporarily non-functional, and all elevated stations were plunged into a total blackout. However, MRT officials confirmed that service had gradually returned to normal following swift intervention by technical teams.
Greater Jakarta Light Rapid Transit (LRT) services were also forced to halt operations briefly after losing power, as stated in the original discovery source.
MRT Jakarta issued an apology to commuters for the inconvenience, emphasizing that passenger safety remains their absolute priority, while technical teams continuously monitored field conditions to ensure service stability.
PLN later confirmed that electricity had been fully restored in Jakarta after the outage, as reported by Tempo.co English through Google News.
The incident prompted public demand for stable electricity supply, with residents across social media platforms expressing widespread complaints over repeated disruptions affecting daily life and economic activities in the capital.
Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung responded to the incident by acknowledging that while electricity matters fall under PLN’s authority, the impact on public services such as MRT and LRT is directly felt by the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government, urging relevant agencies to evaluate the electrical system to prevent future mobility paralysis.
Pramono highlighted the importance of energy stability for metropolitan societal movements and economic activities, aligning DKI Provincial Government’s strategic policies with central government instructions on energy efficiency, including the effective implementation of Work From Home (WFH) policies as a real effort to reduce energy consumption amid global energy crisis threats.
