Jakarta climbed to 140th out of 1,000 cities worldwide in Oxford Economics’ Global Cities Index 2026, advancing from 287th place in 2024 and 159th in 2025. Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo announced the new rankings during the National Transportation Day event in Kelapa Gading, attributing the upward movement to major expansions in public transit connectivity and passenger volume.

Transit Improvements Drive National Leadership

Nationally, Jakarta secured the top position among Indonesian cities, followed by Surabaya, Medan, and Bandung. Pramono pointed to a surge in ridership as commuters abandon private cars and motorcycles for mass transit options.

Global Index Scoring Breakdown

The Oxford Economics Global Cities Index assesses 1,000 urban areas across five core categories: economics, human capital, quality of life, environment, and governance. Jakarta achieved its highest mark in human capital, placing 23rd worldwide, and secured 59th place in the economics category. However, the city lagged in several other evaluated metrics. Jakarta placed 372nd in governance, 553rd in the environmental category, and 561st for overall quality of life.

Upcoming Infrastructure Expansion

City officials expect public transit ridership to scale further as ongoing rail projects reach completion. Planned extensions will connect the existing light rail framework to Dukuh Atas, the Jakarta International Stadium, and the Whoosh high-speed rail Halim Station. Once those construction projects finish, the primary framework of public transportation using the light rail system will be properly connected across the capital, according to municipal projections shared during the transportation event.
