Jakarta Tackles Coastal Flooding with Three-Pronged Approach
Jakarta Residents Brace for Coastal Flooding as Officials Work too Drain Waters
Jakarta, Indonesia – Coastal flooding, known locally as “banjir rob,” has inundated residential areas in Muara Angke, Pluit, Penjaringan, North Jakarta. As of Monday, December 16th, residents are grappling with rising waters, prompting swift action from the Jakarta North Water Resources Agency (Sudin SDA Jakut).
“We are implementing several measures to expedite the receding of floodwaters, especially in the hardest-hit areas along Dermaga Ujung Muara Angke,” stated Yudo Widiatmoko,Head of Drainage Maintenance at Sudin SDA Jakut.
The agency is employing a three-pronged approach to mitigate the impact of the rising sea levels. First, they are optimizing the performance of existing stationary pumps. Second, they have deployed “Satgas,” or rapid response teams, to affected areas. they are utilizing mobile pumps to directly address areas experiencing important water accumulation.
In addition to these measures, Sudin SDA Jakut is taking steps to prevent further seawater intrusion. this includes closing off water gates and raising parapets in vulnerable locations.
Recognizing the need for long-term solutions, the agency is also constructing new drainage channels to improve water flow.
“Besides deploying mobile pumps, we are creating ‘crossing’ channels to facilitate faster water drainage from flooded areas,” explained Widiatmoko.
these efforts underscore the ongoing challenge Jakarta faces in managing coastal flooding,a phenomenon exacerbated by rising sea levels and land subsidence.
Battling the Tides: Q&A with Jakarta’s Flood Fighters
As Jakarta residents grapple with rising tides and coastal flooding, known locally as “banjir rob,” NewsDirectory3 sits down with Yudo Widiatmoko,Head of Drainage Maintenance at the Jakarta North Water Resources Agency (Sudin SDA jakut),to discuss the city’s response.
ND3: Mr. Widiatmoko, Muara Angke, Pluit, and Penjaringan have been especially hard hit by this latest round of flooding. Can you describe the situation on the ground and what measures Sudin SDA Jakut is taking?
Yudo Widiatmoko: We’re seeing meaningful flooding in these areas, especially along Dermaga Ujung muara Angke. Our priority is to expedite the receding of floodwaters. We’re implementing a three-pronged approach: optimizing our stationary pumps, deploying mobile pump units through our “Satgas” rapid response teams, and taking preventative measures to limit further seawater intrusion.
ND3: Those sound like immediate solutions. What about longer-term strategies to combat this recurring problem?
Yudo Widiatmoko: Beyond our immediate response, we recognize the need for enduring solutions. We are actively constructing new drainage channels to improve water flow and creating ’crossing’ channels to facilitate faster drainage from flooded areas.
ND3: Jakarta is particularly vulnerable to coastal flooding due to a combination of rising sea levels and land subsidence. What role does Sudin SDA Jakut play in addressing these larger environmental challenges?
Yudo Widiatmoko: While our primary focus is flood mitigation, we are constantly evaluating and improving our infrastructure to better manage the impact of these environmental factors. Building resilience against climate change is a shared obligation that requires collaboration across all levels of government and society.
