Jakarta,Indonesia – Jakarta Timur officials are urging residents to combat stigma and discrimination against people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) as part of World AIDS Day 2024 commemorations.
Acting Mayor Iin Mutmainnah emphasized the importance of ensuring equal rights for PLWHA, including those with HIV and AIDS (ODHA) and children with HIV (ADHIV).
“We must provide them with equal rights. Eliminate negative stigma, and ensure there is no discrimination,” Mutmainnah stated during the World AIDS Day 2024 event held at the Jakarta Timur City Hall. “We hope that in Jakarta Timur, there will be no new infections, deaths, or stigma.”
Mutmainnah called on all Jakarta Timur residents to use World AIDS Day as a catalyst for increased solidarity, compassion, and commitment to preventing the spread of HIV.
“This World AIDS Day, we are committed to tackling HIV/AIDS with more effective concrete steps,” she saeid.The Acting Mayor highlighted the crucial role of collaboration between government agencies, community organizations, and residents in combating HIV/AIDS. She encouraged the promotion of anti-stigma and anti-discrimination values at the grassroots level, involving neighborhood leaders and community health workers.
“The theme of World AIDS day 2024, ‘Equal Rights and Together We Can,’ aims to ensure that PLWHA can access their rights and live independently,” Mutmainnah explained. “Eliminating stigma and discrimination is vital for the success of HIV/AIDS control efforts by 2030. This requires support from various programs and sectors.”
John Marbun, Secretary of the Jakarta Timur AIDS Commission, expressed gratitude for the progress made in HIV/AIDS control in the region, noting a decline in new infections.
“We are grateful for the decrease in cases. We also agreed on a joint commitment led by Ibu Iin to control and prevent HIV/AIDS in Jakarta Timur,” Marbun said.
