Jakarta’s New Era of Rail Travel: KAI Unveils 16 High-Performance Trains

Jakarta, Indonesia – In a bold move to redefine rail travel, Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) has announced the launch of 16 new trains as part of its 2025 Train Travel Chart (Gapeka). Slated to roll out on Feb. 1, 2025, these trains promise enhanced accessibility, improved comfort, and a boost to regional economic development.

“With the implementation of Gapeka 2025, we’re offering more travel options that prioritize comfort, safety, and punctuality,” said KAI Vice President of Public Relations Anne Purba. “These new routes aim to connect strategic regions, providing better mobility solutions and opening up economic opportunities across the country.”

The lineup includes a diverse range of trains designed to cater to different destinations and passenger needs. Among the notable additions are the Ijen Express, linking Ketapang and Malang; the Madiun Jaya, connecting Madiun and Pasarsenen; and the Cakrabuana, serving routes between Purwokerto, Cirebon, and Gambir.

Tourism hubs like Surabaya, Solo Balapan, and Semarang Tawang Bank Jateng will benefit from the Sancaka Utara and Gunungjati trains, while the Batavia will streamline travel between Solo Balapan and Gambir. Each train is equipped with modern amenities, offering executive, business, and economy class options, with capacities ranging from 360 to 580 passengers.

Driving Economic Growth

Anne emphasized that the new routes are more than just transportation solutions—they’re catalysts for economic development. “By improving accessibility, we’re unlocking economic potential in previously underserved areas. This will support tourism, trade, and local investment, creating a ripple effect across communities,” she said.

Sustainable Innovation

KAI has introduced several eco-friendly measures to reduce its environmental footprint. These include the installation of water stations at train stations, the use of facial recognition technology, and the replacement of traditional cutlery with wooden alternatives in dining services.

In December 2024, KAI launched the Carbon Footprint feature in its Access by KAI app to encourage travelers to choose greener transportation options. The company has also replaced wooden sleepers on steel bridges with more durable and environmentally friendly synthetic alternatives.

Looking Ahead

The launch of these trains is just the beginning of KAI’s ambitious plans. The company aims to introduce further innovations alongside the implementation of Gapeka 2025, reinforcing its commitment to quality service and sustainability.

“This initiative is about more than transportation—it’s about improving lives,” Anne said. “By offering efficient, eco-friendly travel options, we hope to inspire more people to embrace public transportation, ultimately enhancing the quality of life for communities across Indonesia.”

As Indonesia prepares to welcome these new trains, travelers can look forward to a seamless, comfortable, and sustainable rail experience that connects the nation like never before.
