Jamal Salami, the head coach of the Jordanian national football team, has been granted Jordanian citizenship following a period of significant achievement with the squad. The decision was announced following Jordan’s narrow 3-2 defeat to Morocco in the 2025 Arab Cup final.
Salami, a 55-year-old Moroccan national, took the helm of the Jordanian team in 2023, succeeding fellow Moroccan coach Hussein Amouta. His tenure has been marked by a commitment to long-term development, as he explained in a post-match press conference.He stated he wasn’t focused on quick wins, but building a sustainable project for Jordanian football.

Salami’s leadership culminated in a historic qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup – a first for Jordan. This achievement prompted Prince Ali bin Al Hussein, president of the Jordan Football Association, to request Salami continue as coach. the Crown Prince then revealed King Abdullah II had personally decided to bestow Jordanian citizenship upon Salami as a mark of appreciation.
During his 23 matches in charge, Salami’s record stands at 11 wins, 6 draws, and 6 losses. This success led the team to a remarkable run to the final of the 2025 Arab Cup, despite the eventual loss to his home country.
