A grand jury in Galveston County, Texas, has indicted a 61-year-old man in connection with the notorious “Texas Killing Fields” cold case, marking a significant development in a mystery that has remained unsolved for more than 40 years. James Dolphs Elmore Jr. Faces charges of manslaughter and felony tampering with evidence in the death of Laura Miller, along with an additional charge of tampering with evidence in the murder of Audrey Cook, according to the Galveston District Attorney’s Office.

The indictment comes four decades after the bodies of approximately 30 women were discovered in an area along Calder Road and Ervin Street in League City, located about 28 miles southeast of Houston. The victims, mainly girls and young women, were found in the rural field between 1984 and 1991, giving the stretch of land near Interstate 45 its grim nickname.

Elmore was arrested on Tuesday, April 1, 2026, and is being held without bond in the Galveston County Jail. Court and jail records did not list an attorney who could speak on behalf of Elmore at the time of reporting. Galveston County District Attorney Kenneth Cusick announced the charges on Wednesday, stating that prosecutors have solved a piece of a tragic mystery that has inspired books, movies and a Netflix documentary.

Victims and Timeline

Laura Miller was 16 years old when her remains were found in the area known as the “Texas Killing Fields” in February 1986. Audrey Cook was 30 years old at the time of her death. Both bodies were discovered in the infamous area in 1986, according to prosecutors.

Miller and Cook were two of four young women whose bodies were found between 1984 and 1991 in the rural field off a desolate dirt road in League City. The other two women were 25-year-old Heidi Fye-Villareal and 34-year-old Donna Prudhomme. Authorities indicated that Elmore helped conceal the bodies of the two young women who disappeared in the 1980s, after reviewing evidence over decades.

Previous Investigations and Suspects

For several years, Texas authorities have worked to crack the case surrounding who is responsible for the murders. Over the last 40 years, authorities have pointed to Clyde Hedrick as the prime suspect in the murders of numerous women in Calder Road Field. Hedrick was reportedly convicted of abuse of a corpse relating to the death of Ellen Beason in 1986.

In a separate development, William Reece pleaded guilty to murder in 2022 stemming from the deaths of Laura Smither, Kelli Cox and Jessica Cain, according to local reporting. Investigators believe multiple perpetrators may be responsible for the deaths in the area where the bodies of dozens of women were found beginning in the 1970s.

Investigators had long suspected that prolific serial killer Ted Bundy was responsible for some of the killings in the area, though this theory has not been confirmed in relation to the current charges against Elmore.

Renewed Prosecutorial Effort

Galveston County District Attorney Kenneth Cusick said after being appointed as district attorney in October that he would take a harder look at these cases. The Galveston County DA’s office has indicated Notice other active leads in the case that went unsolved for more than 40 years.

The case has drawn national attention over the decades due to the number of victims and the inability of authorities to identify those responsible for the majority of the deaths. The area became known as one of the most notorious unsolved serial murder cases in American history.

Prosecutors said Elmore would remain in jail pending trial following the grand jury indictment on Tuesday. The charges represent one of the first major breakthroughs in the decades-old investigation into the deaths of women found in the Texas Killing Fields area.
