Gunn Addresses Batman’s DC Universe Role
Updated June 17, 2025
As DC Studios gears up for its July 11 launch with James Gunn’s “Superman,” the studio is carefully considering the role of its iconic superheroes, including Batman. gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios, has called figuring out the Caped Crusader his “biggest issue.”
Gunn addressed the possibility of incorporating Matt Reeves’ version of Batman, starring Robert Pattinson, into the new DC Universe. He indicated that while not impossible, it’s improbable that Pattinson’s Batman will cross over into the DCU established by the upcoming “Superman” film starring David Corenswet.
“It would be a consideration,” Gunn said. ”We’d have to think about it. It is not like we’ve never discussed it.” He clarified, “I would never say zero, because you just never know. But it’s not likely. it’s not likely at all.”
Gunn also addressed rumors surrounding “Batman Part II,” stating, “Batman Part II is not canceled. We don’t have a script. Matt’s slow. Let him take his time. Let him do what he’s doing.”
Currently, Gunn is developing “the Brave and the Bold,” a separate batman film with an undisclosed writer. Andy Muschietti is slated to direct. The film, still in development as of February 2025, will draw inspiration from Grant Morrison’s comic run, focusing on Batman and his son, Damian Wayne.
Gunn emphasized the importance of Batman’s presence in the DC Universe. “Batman’s my biggest issue in all of DC right now, personally,” Gunn said. “I am working with the writer of Batman and trying to get it right, because he’s incredibly significant to DC, as is Wonder Woman.”
He added, “Batman has to have a reason for existing, right? So Batman can’t just be ‘Oh, we’re making a Batman movie because Batman’s the biggest character in all of warner Bros.,’ which he is. But as there’s a need for him in the DCU and a need that he’s not exactly the same as Matt’s Batman… so we’re dealing with that.”
What’s next
DC Studios plans to finalize scripts for both Wonder Woman and Batman, ensuring a cohesive and compelling future for these key characters within the DC Universe. The DCU launch aims to avoid pitfalls of other cinematic universes by carefully planning each superhero’s integration.
