James Van Der Beek, the actor best known for his role as Dawson Leery in the beloved teen drama Dawson’s Creek, has died at the age of 48. His family announced his passing peacefully this morning, February 11, 2026, via a statement posted to his Instagram account.

Dawson’s Creek, which ran from 1998 to 2003, captivated audiences with its portrayal of adolescence in the fictional town of Capeside. Van Der Beek’s portrayal of the aspiring filmmaker Dawson Leery, navigating friendships, first loves and the complexities of growing up, cemented his status as a teen idol alongside co-stars Katie Holmes, Michelle Williams, and Joshua Jackson. The series became a cultural touchstone, launching the careers of its young cast and influencing a generation of television dramas.

In November 2024, Van Der Beek publicly revealed his diagnosis with stage three colorectal cancer. “It’s cancer,” he wrote in an Instagram post, acknowledging the widespread impact of the disease and sharing his own experience. The diagnosis had initially been made in the latter half of 2023.

The actor frequently shared updates on his physical and emotional journey with his 1.8 million Instagram followers, using his platform to encourage others to prioritize preventative care and early screenings. In a video message November 2024, he spoke openly about the fear and overwhelm of a cancer diagnosis, while maintaining a hopeful outlook. “Miracles happen,” he said.

He reflected on a particularly difficult period in March 2025, describing it as “the hardest year” of his life. Van Der Beek acknowledged the temporary loss of his ability to fully fulfill his roles as a father, husband, and provider during treatment. However, he also expressed a newfound appreciation for vulnerability and the importance of accepting help and self-worth.

Van Der Beek is survived by his wife, Kimberly Brook, and their six children: Olivia, Joshua, Annabel, Emilia, Gwendolyn, and Jeremiah. He married Brook in 2010 after divorcing actress Heather McComb.

The news of Van Der Beek’s death prompted an outpouring of tributes from colleagues and fans. His Dancing With The Stars partner, Emma Slater, described him as “family” and expressed her devastation.

Prior to his role in Dawson’s Creek, Van Der Beek appeared in films such as Angus and I Love You, I Love You Not. Following the success of the series, he continued to work steadily in television and film, with roles in How I Met Your Mother, Varsity Blues – earning him a Breakthrough Performance award at the MTV Movie Awards in 1999 – and more recently, Bad Hair. He auctioned off memorabilia from Dawson’s Creek and Varsity Blues in December 2025 to support his cancer recovery.

In September 2025, the cast of Dawson’s Creek reunited to support Van Der Beek at a fundraising event for the organization “Fuck Cancer.” Michelle Williams, Katie Holmes, and Joshua Jackson were among those who appeared on stage in New York City to discuss the pilot episode of the series. Van Der Beek was unable to attend in person due to a viral illness, but shared a heartfelt message via video, visibly impacted by his ongoing treatment.

Van Der Beek’s journey reflected a commitment to openness and vulnerability, even in the face of immense personal challenges. He leaves behind a legacy not only as a talented actor, but as a father, husband, and advocate for cancer awareness. His willingness to share his story served as a powerful reminder of the importance of early detection and the enduring power of hope.
