In the second row, Darragh Murray partners with James Boyle, while a dynamic backrow sees Kendellen and Cian Prendergast replace Nick Timoney and Gavin Coombes respectively.Kendellen, who captained the Emerging Ireland side on their accomplished tour of Bloemfontein last year, earns deserved recognition for his consistent performances. Prendergast returns to the matchday 23 after being a late withdrawal last week due to a gastro bug.
Tom O’Toole, having overcome a minor injury, is included amongst the replacements. Ciarán Frawley provides outhalf cover, and the exciting young Gavin,a former Ireland Under-20 Grand Slam winner, will make his debut in the centres alongside Shayne Bolton, who also scored on his Ireland ‘A’ debut earlier this year.
Acknowledging Osborne’s Lions call-Up
The declaration of the team was slightly overshadowed by confirmation of Jamie Osborne’s inclusion in the British & Irish Lions squad for the tour to australia. Farrell and the Irish management were fast to offer their congratulations.
“On behalf of the Ireland team, I woudl like to congratulate Jamie on his selection to the British & Irish Lions,” said Farrell. “It’s fantastic news for Jamie and we wish him well in Australia. Jamie has been a consistent performer for Leinster and Ireland and I’m sure he’ll be a great addition to the Lions squad.”
O’Connell’s Perspective and Portugal Challenge
Speaking before the Lions news broke, Ireland forwards coach Paul O’Connell highlighted the positive attitude within the squad.
“I have been really pleased with the attitude of the players over the last number of weeks,” O’Connell stated. “The dedication and diligence of the squad in testing conditions over in Tbilisi demonstrated the players’ willingness to embrace challenges and hopefully that bodes well again this weekend.”
O’Connell also emphasized the challenge posed by Portugal, describing them as “another extraordinary emerging side who look to play an exciting brand of rugby.” He added, ”We know that we’re in for another battle, hopefully in front of another big crowd of travelling supporters.”
He concluded by offering his congratulations to the debutants: “To our three new debutants – Shayne, Alex and Hugh – congratulations on their selection. The team will try to deliver a positive performance for them and their families.”
