A Steadfast Presence for Swedish Football
Janne hammarbäck, who served as head of security for the Swedish national football team for 22 years and 295 international matches, has died of cancer at the age of 68 after a period of illness. He assumed the role in 1992 and remained a constant presence through the 1994 World Cup and beyond.
Former national team captain Tommy Söderberg described Hammarbäck as “entirely unique,” praising his keen observation skills and down-to-earth demeanor. Söderberg emphasized Hammarbäck’s dedication and care for both players and managers.
Hammarbäck’s tenure wasn’t without its challenges.During the 1994 World cup in the United States, he skillfully managed a suspected bomb threat targeting the Swedish team’s bus, wich ultimately proved unfounded. This incident underscored the critical role he played in ensuring the team’s safety during major international competitions.
an Unlikely Friendship with Zlatan Ibrahimović
hammarbäck forged a close friendship with superstar Zlatan Ibrahimović when the player first joined the national team in 2001. Prior to Ibrahimović’s debut, reports surfaced regarding the player’s past impersonation of a police officer in Malmö, prompting Hammarbäck to investigate the matter.
This initial investigation blossomed into a lasting friendship. Hammarbäck recounted visiting Ibrahimović in both Holland and Italy, even offering support during Ibrahimović’s suspension from the national team in 2006, reportedly requiring some encouragement for the player to return.
