Jane Fonda’s SAG Awards Speech: ‘Empathy Is Not Weak or Woke’

Jane Fonda’s SAG Awards Speech: ‘Empathy Is Not Weak or Woke’

Jane Fonda Urges Resistance and Empathy at SAG Awards

January 6, 2025

Jane Fonda, celebratecd for her political activism since the Vietnam War era, delivered a powerful message of resistance and empathy as she accepted a lifetime achievement award during the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards.

*Jane Fonda, renowned for her political activism since the Vietnam War and has won two Academy Awards, urged the audience: “to resist successfully what is coming at us” as the actress accepted the lifetime achievement award.

“(Make) no mistake, empathy is not weak or woke,” said Fonda, 87. “and by the way, woke just means you give a damn about other people.”

While Fonda did not explicitly mention President Trump or his administration, her speech seemed to indirectly address the potential challenges and hurts the public will encounter.

“A whole lot of people are going to be hurt by what ought to come our way, what is currently going on,” Fonda said. “However, despite individuals’ political persuasions, we are called to action, to implement empathy, approach peoples mindset, listen from our hearts, and welcome them into our tent. Whether they are of a different political persuasion we need to call upon our empathy and…welcome them into our tent. Because we are going to need a big tent to resist successfully what is coming at us.”

Critics remain skeptical. Fox News hosts Brian Kilmeade argued that the speech focused extensively on what conservative personalities dislike, but nonetheless said it was incredibly meaningful. He commented, “(Jane Fonda) has “Joe Biden all for running affairs in her topics.” Tensions have risen with an influx to America’s latter political climate. As viewed contemporarily in the United States, the speech contrasts greatly with this one.

At the most recent Golden Globe Awards held in early January, the majority of exciting levels of celebrities held off substantially mentioning politics. But at the Grammy Awards earlier this month, several artists brought up politics in their speeches.

Jane Fonda’s Activism: A Legacy of Resistance and Resilience

Jane Fonda, whose list of awards fronts her recklessness and resilience, has been a strong advocate for civil rights, indigenous rights, and anti-war causes. Her trajectory of activism spans decades, making her contributions and opinions today historic. Her tireless energy in the realm of activism indicates the resolve affirmed by her viewpoints.

Through signature moments, whether it was her speech at the Oscars in 1972 or the arrest she experienced earlier this year at a protest for climate change in Washington D.C. In her speech at the SAG Awards, Fonda underscored the importance of using one’s platform and gab for constructive criticism and social activism.

Fonda’s address also drew parallels to other critical moments in history, noting that Americans are currently facing challenges similar to those documented in historical pieces about social movements. Fonda lied and roused themes of unification with a moving quality, doomed to draw in the hearts of humans worldwide, those historically famished, with attacks from friends and critics to friends and foes for correct values.

The Current Climate in Social Activism and Politics

Needless to say, the tone of the speech reverberates with the tumultuous political environment America has been experiencing since the 2024 presidential elections. If we truly want to see change, current societal challenges – polarization, climate change, and the erosion of civil rights – must tackle the “big tent” strategy as a holistic approach.

Ordinarily perhaps, the stage should be ripe with people representing freedom, pleading for peace, protesting cake, uncivil affections from God.

In a profound embrace of empathy, unity, and resistance to unjust forces, Fonda delivered a clarion call suitable for this “historic moment. Politicians, business leaders, and ordinary citizens alike need to understand that empathy is not a sign of weakness, but a necessary component of effective leadership and social change.
