Jannik Sinner arrives at the Mutua Madrid Open as the top seed and the heavy favorite to win a fifth consecutive ATP Masters 1000 title, a feat no player has achieved in the history of the sport.

Sinner enters the tournament riding a 17-match winning streak that began after his quarter-final loss to Jakub Mensik in Doha in February. Since then, he has captured titles at Indian Wells, Miami and Monte-Carlo, with his victory over Carlos Alcaraz in the Monte-Carlo final marking his first clay-court Masters 1000 crown.

A win in Madrid would give Sinner five straight Masters 1000 titles, dating back to his triumph at the Rolex Paris Masters last season. This would make him the first player in tennis history to accomplish such a streak, surpassing the best efforts of Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer.

Despite his dominant form, Sinner acknowledges the unique challenges posed by the Madrid conditions. “I think here it’s a very unique playing style,” he told reporters on Tuesday in Madrid. “It’s very high altitude and it can be windy at times, so it’s very difficult to play. But I think every different kind of clay court can help me as I am trying to improve as a player.”

Sinner admitted he has never advanced beyond the quarter-finals at the Madrid Open in previous appearances, noting, “Here, it might be one of the most challenging ones because of certain things and also depending on who you play… You have to adapt yourself. But I have never played very well here, so let’s see how it goes this year. But I’m very happy to be here.”

The absence of Carlos Alcaraz, who withdrew due to a wrist injury, and Novak Djokovic, who is not competing in the event, has cleared a significant portion of Sinner’s path to the title. Alcaraz’s withdrawal means he will not defend the 330 points he earned from reaching the final in Madrid in 2025, allowing Sinner to extend his lead in the ATP Rankings without needing to play a match.

Sinner returned to the world No. 1 ranking last week after overtaking Alcaraz. Following Alcaraz’s withdrawal from the Barcelona Open, Sinner’s lead grew to 390 points, with the Italian now holding 13,350 points compared to Alcaraz’s 13,240. This margin represents the largest lead Sinner has held over his Spanish rival since reclaiming the top spot.

Sinner’s focus remains on the immediate challenge in Madrid rather than looking ahead to the Italian Open in Rome. He confirmed his participation in Madrid despite having taken time off after his Monte-Carlo victory, stating that the opportunity to pursue history was too tempting to pass up.

Should Sinner win in Madrid, he would not only secure a historic fifth consecutive Masters 1000 title but also strengthen his position at the summit of the ATP Rankings as the clay-court swing heads toward Roland Garros. His ability to adapt to the demanding conditions of high-altitude clay will be tested against a field eager to end his remarkable run.
