sinner Apologises to Fans After Cincinnati Retirement, US Open Doubts loom
CINCINNATI, OH - August 18, 2025 – World No. 1 Jannik Sinner cut a despondent figure after being forced to retire from the cincinnati Open final against Carlos Alcaraz after just five games. The 24-year-old, who celebrated his birthday with a semi-final win over Terence Atmane, expressed his deep regret to fans, citing illness as the reason for his withdrawal.
“I’m super, super sorry to disappoint you [but] from yesterday I didn’t feel great,” Sinner told the crowd. “I thoght that I would improve during the night, but I came up worse. I tried to come out, tried to make it at least a small match, but I couldn’t handle more, so I’m very sorry.”
The abrupt end to the match raises concerns about Sinner’s participation in the US Open mixed doubles event, scheduled to begin Tuesday with Czechia’s Katerina Siniakova. While Sinner didn’t explicitly address his plans for the doubles competition, he hinted at needing time to recover.
“I love Grand Slams a lot. This is the main tournament of my season and my career,” Sinner said. “The US Open is tough, but I’m looking forward to it.I just need a couple of days of recovery.”
This setback comes after a remarkable run for Sinner, who recently became the first Italian to reach the world No.1 ranking. His victory at Wimbledon in 2025 cemented his place in tennis history, making him the first Italian, male or female,to win the prestigious tournament.Prior to his professional tennis career, Sinner was a champion skier, showcasing his athletic versatility.
The tennis world now awaits updates on Sinner’s condition, hoping the top-ranked player can recover in time to compete at the US Open. The coming days will be crucial as he assesses his health and determines whether he can participate in both the singles and doubles events.
