Japan-Australia Defense Cooperation: Frigate Technology Transfer for Enhanced Indo-Pacific Security
Japan’s National Security Council approved the transfer of defense technology to Australia on November 28. This decision is part of a strengthened defense partnership between Japan and Australia, especially in the Indo-Pacific region.
Australia is considering Japan’s Mogami-class frigate for its next-generation frigate program. The Australian government has shortlisted two candidates, one being an upgraded version of the Mogami-class called the 06FFM, a 4,800-ton multipurpose escort vessel.
If selected, both nations will collaborate on developing and producing the frigates. Japan will transfer systems, parts, and technology to Australia. This arrangement is in line with Japan’s National Defense Strategy, which recognizes Australia as a vital strategic partner.
The transfer will be governed by an agreement to prevent unauthorized use or transfer to other countries. Japan aims to ensure proper management of the technology and equipment transferred. Australia will be responsible for preventing misuse and obtaining consent before any third-party transfers.
The partnership is expected to enhance naval capabilities in both countries. By sharing technology, Japan and Australia aim to strengthen security in the Indo-Pacific, benefiting both defense and economic growth.
The Australian government will continue discussions with Japan and other candidates before making a final decision on its frigate selection. If Japan’s proposal is chosen, it could lead to deeper military cooperation between the two countries.
