Japan’s Ishikawa Prefecture Hit by Record-Breaking Heavy Rain
Japan’s Ishikawa Prefecture, mainly the Noto area, received record-breaking heavy rain, prompting the Meteorological Agency to issue a “heavy rain special warning.” The severe weather caused widespread damage, with many rivers overflowing and landslides occurring, resulting in one confirmed death and seven people losing contact.
The Noto area in Ishikawa Prefecture was severely affected by the heavy rains, with frequent disasters reported in areas mainly around Okinoto. Landslides occurred near the prefectural road tunnel leading to the center of Wajima, blocking vehicle traffic at 24 locations on Route 15. Additionally, buildings were flooded, and rivers overflowed in many places.
The heavy rains caused a total of seven people in Suzu, Wajima City, and Noto Town to go missing. In addition, one person died in Zhuzhou City. The Ishikawa Prefectural Government issued evacuation instructions to approximately 21,400 households in 2 cities and 1 town, including Suzu City, Wajima City, and Noto Town, affecting a total of 44,500 people.
The Ishikawa Prefectural Police and Firefighting Unit received reports from many people that individuals and vehicles were swept away by floods. Among the seven missing people, four were workers working on Noto Peninsula earthquake reconstruction and road repair projects in Wajima City. The incident occurred near the “Nakaya Tunnel” in Monzen Town, Wajima City, where about 60 workers were working on road repairs, and some workers were buried by landslides that washed away on a nearby national highway.
The severe weather has caused significant disruptions in the region, with many residents affected by the heavy rains and subsequent flooding. The authorities are working to respond to the situation and provide assistance to those in need.
