Japan’s‍ exports experienced a 1.7% year-over-year‍ decline⁤ in May, marking the most critically important ⁤drop as September of ‍last year. This figure, while less severe than the 3.8% decrease economists had predicted,‍ represents a sharp reversal from April’s ⁤2% gain.

The Bank of ‍Japan (BOJ) recently cautioned that Japan’s economic‍ growth⁢ is⁣ likely to “moderate,” citing trade-related factors that⁤ could‍ lead to slower overseas economies and reduced⁤ domestic corporate profits. The BOJ emphasized the unpredictable nature of trade policies and their potential impact on ⁤global economic‍ activity.

This⁢ export⁣ slump has already impacted Japan’s GDP, which contracted by 0.2% in the quarter ending⁢ in March. This was the first quarterly contraction in a year.

Imports also fell, dropping 7.7% in May.

U.S. President Donald Trump said ⁢Wednesday that Japan is being “tough” in ‍ongoing trade discussions. Six rounds of negotiations involving Ryosei Akazawa, ⁢Howard Lutnick, ⁣and Scott Bessent have yet⁣ to⁤ produce a breakthrough.

Japan currently faces a 10% tariff on exports to the⁣ U.S. This could increase to 24% under Trump’s “reciprocal tariffs” ⁢if a trade⁤ agreement isn’t reached by the July 9 deadline. the ‍country’s economic role is being tested.

What’s next

The coming weeks are⁣ critical for Japan as it⁢ seeks to navigate trade negotiations and mitigate the impact of slowing exports⁢ on its overall economic performance. All eyes are on whether Japan can solidify ⁤its economic role amid global uncertainty.
