Japan’s Foreign Ministry Seeks Important Budget Increase for Fiscal Year 2026

Japan’s Foreign Ministry is requesting a substantial budget increase of 15.3% for fiscal year 2026,aiming for a total of ¥874.3 billion. This proposed budget reflects a heightened focus on both information security and economic stability in a complex geopolitical landscape.
Combating Information Warfare
A key component of the budget request, totaling ¥44.1 billion, is dedicated to countering information warfare. This includes analyzing and mitigating the impact of disinformation campaigns, particularly those originating from foreign sources. The ministry intends to proactively disseminate information internationally and invest in both the infrastructure and skilled personnel – digital human resources – needed to effectively address these challenges.
Strengthening Economic Ties and security
The ministry also plans to actively support the international expansion of Japanese businesses through its network of diplomatic missions.Furthermore, a significant emphasis will be placed on bolstering economic security through a proactive approach to official development assistance (ODA) projects, described as an “offer-type” strategy. This suggests a move towards providing assistance that directly addresses the needs and priorities of recipient countries while concurrently advancing Japan’s economic interests.
Protecting Overseas Assets and Personnel
Recognizing the increasing risks faced by its global presence, the ministry is requesting ¥321.8 billion for the maintenance and repair of its overseas facilities. This funding will also be used to enhance the protection and security of Japanese expatriates working abroad.
Expanding Security Assistance
Japan is committed to providing support to like-minded nations through official security assistance, offering defense equipment free of charge. The budget request includes ¥8.21 billion allocated to this program, signaling a continued commitment to regional security cooperation.
