Japan Gas Rate Hike: Power & Suppliers Increase Prices
Japanese Households Face Utility Rate Increases in October
Major Japanese power and city gas providers are preparing to raise rates in October, following the scheduled conclusion of the government’s subsidy program at the end of September. This adjustment will impact household budgets across the country.
Electricity Rate Hikes
Ten power companies announced on Friday, September 20, 2024, that electricity rates for average households will increase by between ¥467 and ¥536 per month starting in September, reflecting the removal of a ¥2 per kilowatt-hour subsidy that was in place during the summer months. Notably, Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings (TEPCO) will see a rate increase of ¥520, bringing the total to ¥8,652.
City Gas Rate Adjustments
Four city gas companies are also expected to raise rates by ¥172 to ¥222 per month from September, as the government’s ¥8 per cubic meter subsidy ends. Tokyo Gas, a leading provider, is projected to increase rates by ¥222, resulting in a total cost of ¥5,710.
Government Subsidy Impact
from July through September 2024, the Japanese government implemented subsidies of up to ¥2.4 per kilowatt-hour for electricity and ¥10 per cubic meter for gas. These measures were designed to alleviate the financial burden on consumers, reducing monthly utility bills by approximately ¥3,000 on average. The end of these subsidies directly contributes to the upcoming rate increases.
These changes underscore the ongoing volatility in global energy markets and the impact of government policy on household expenses.Consumers should anticipate adjustments to their budgets as utility costs rise in October.
