Today, the 22nd (Sunday), the central day of a three-day holiday, heavy rains are expected, especially in Hokuriku and Tohoku, due to the passage of a low-pressure system other than Typhoon No. 14. In Noto, Ishikawa Prefecture, where a special warning for heavy rains has been issued, precipitation has exceeded 400 mm in 48 hours, and disasters have already occurred in some places. Please exercise extreme caution.

As the autumn rain front moves southward, there is a risk of heavy rain from western Japan to the Pacific coast of the Kanto region.

48-hour cumulative precipitation

The autumn rain front is extending into the Sea of Japan and is becoming extremely active due to the flow of moist air around the edge of the Pacific high pressure system and moist air around Typhoon No. 14.

Precipitation in the 48 hours to 6:00 a.m. was 424.0 mm in Wajima City and 324.5 mm in Suzu City, both the highest on record. Precipitation is also increasing in other parts of Hokuriku and Tohoku, reaching more than 150 mm in large areas. Wajima City’s average September rainfall is 214.5 mm, making it a record-breaking heavy rain, nearly double the amount in 48 hours.

As of 6:00 a.m., a special heavy rainfall warning equivalent to alert level 5 has been issued for Noto, Ishikawa Prefecture, and a landslide warning equivalent to alert level 4 has been issued for Yamagata and Niigata Prefectures.

Rain Clouds Forecast 22 (Sunday) 9:00

The low pressure system is expected to pass through Hokuriku and Tohoku around noon, and active rain clouds will begin to gather around the Noto Peninsula again.

It is forecast to cross the Pacific Ocean tonight, but until it passes, active rain clouds will pass intermittently and there is a risk of extremely heavy rain, so close vigilance is warranted.

The risk of disasters such as landslides, rising river levels, flooding, and flooding of low-lying lands is expected to increase. Damage has already been reported in Noto, Ishikawa Prefecture, and evacuation orders have been issued for various parts of Hokuriku and Tohoku. Please stay safe until the rain stops.

Beware of heavy rains from western to eastern Japan

Furthermore, as the autumn rain front moves southward, rainfall is expected to become heavier on the Pacific side, from western Japan to the Kanto region.

Extremely heavy rainfall was observed this morning in Karatsu, Saga Prefecture, with 76.0 mm per hour until 0:50 a.m., and in Kubokawa, Kochi Prefecture, with 69.5 mm per hour until 4:30 a.m.

We cannot let our guard down because heavy localized rains could cause flooding of roads and low-lying lands. The areas subject to heavy rains can change depending on the position of the front, so vigilance is necessary.

Strong winds in a wide area. Be aware of transport impacts

box3

After Typhoon No. 14 developed into a cyclone, it continues to develop and move across the Sea of Japan, causing the area of strong winds to expand. A storm warning has been issued for Fukuoka, Nagasaki and Yamaguchi prefectures, where the low pressure system will pass.

Tomorrow, the pressure difference between low and high pressure systems will increase, so southwesterly winds are expected to strengthen from western Japan to the Pacific Ocean side of the Kanto region, and easterly winds are expected to strengthen in northern Tohoku and Hokkaido.

Even in areas where the rain is not too heavy, strong winds are expected to affect transportation, so if you plan to travel, pay attention to weather information and service information.
