Katie Boulter,the British number three ranked 59th in the world,was defeated by Romania’s Sorana Cirstea,ranked 51st,in the second round of the Japan Open in Osaka on October 16,2025. Cirstea secured the victory with a score of 6-3, 6-1, completing the match in one hour and nine minutes.
Early Breaks Define First Set
The opening set was characterized by a series of breaks of serve, with three occurring within the first four games. Cirstea capitalized on these opportunities, establishing a 3-1 lead and ultimately closing out the set 6-3.
Cirstea Dominates Second Set
Cirstea continued her aggressive play into the second set,breaking Boulter’s serve three times to quickly build a commanding 5-0 advantage. While Boulter managed to break back, she was unable to consolidate the break, and Cirstea held serve to secure her place in the quarter-finals.
