Tokyo’s Shinjuku Station, recognized by Guinness World Records as the busiest railway station in the world, is testing mobile robotic rubbish bins on weekdays between 10:00 and 17:00 from September 8 to November 20, according to East Japan Railway. The pilot project aims to ease the heavy workload of station sanitation workers who must empty traditional wastebaskets manually more than 10 times a day in a sprawling underground transit hub that serves more than 2.7 million passengers daily.
The automated waste collection machines stand just over one meter tall and feature a distinctive train-themed livery adorned with the station mascot, Shinjukuma, alongside large, googly eyes that have drawn attention from commuters and tourists. According to East Japan Railway, three units are operating on the first basement-level paid concourse along pre-programmed circular routes between ticket gates. The devices move at a cautious speed of 20 centimeters per second, allowing them to navigate dense commuter traffic safely and stop quickly when encountering passengers.
Operational Scope and Safety Design
Engineered to assist human sanitation crews rather than replace them, the robots collect general waste and plastic bottles before returning autonomously to a designated collection point when full. Shinya Kawamichi, a research official with East Japan Railway, explained that the trial evaluates how automated systems handle the hectic underground environment while measuring commuter willingness to use them.

Kawamichi also noted that the robots are designed to be slow so that people can easily deposit trash while walking past. The rail operator is using video and sensor data exclusively for internal safety and navigation analysis during the trial period.
Commuter Reactions and Public Infrastructure Context
The deployment arrives in a transit environment where permanent wastebaskets have been significantly reduced over recent years due to cleanliness and security policies. Within the specific section of the complex managed by East Japan Railway, only seven sets of bins and recycling boxes remain available across the massive multi-level facility.
Public response to the trial has been mixed. Some travelers pointed out that Tokyo stations remain remarkably clean because citizens customarily carry their rubbish home. Others, however, welcomed the added convenience. University student Ryunosuke Noguchi told reporters that it is easier if you can throw things away while walking. Meanwhile, international visitors navigating the expansive station praised the approachable design of the machines. Chris Genseliein, a 30-year-old train driver from Germany visiting the hub, remarked that the eyes are very cute while noting the general scarcity of stationary bins across the rail network. East Japan Railway will evaluate passenger engagement metrics and navigation data following the conclusion of the trial on November 20.
