Japan Tourism: 42.7 Million Visitors Set New Record in 2025
Japan welcomed more than 40 million visitors last year for the first time, the Japanese Ministry of Transport announced on Tuesday, as the weakening of the yen increases the archipelago’s attractiveness to foreign tourists. The country recorded 42.7 million visitor arrivals in 2025, exceeding the previous record of 36.8 million reached in 2024.The weakening of the yen is contributing to strengthening the archipelago’s appeal to international tourists.
Though, the number of Chinese tourists plummeted 45% year-on-year in December: only 330,000 visited Japan last month. Relations between the two neighboring powers have deteriorated since Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi suggested in November that Tokyo could intervene militarily if China launched an attack on Taiwan.
