Japanese rail operator JR Central is introducing high-tech private suites on select Shinkansen bullet trains, featuring windows with embedded 5G antennas and noise-cancelling technology designed to improve connectivity and comfort for passengers.
The new suites, announced late last month, will initially be deployed on six trains starting in October 2026. Each suite includes windows manufactured by AGC that incorporate microscopic wires woven into the glass to form functional 5G antennas. These antennas maintain a direct line of sight to nearby 5G base stations, which is critical given the Shinkansen’s operating speed of up to 285 km/h. At such velocities, trains pass cellular infrastructure so rapidly that maintaining a stable connection typically requires frequent handoffs between towers.
