Jascha Rohr Elected New Mayor of Oldenburg

Jascha Rohr has won the mayoral runoff election in Oldenburg, securing 51,6 percent of the vote on September 27, 2026. Backed by the Greens and the CDU, the independent candidate narrowly defeated SPD candidate Ulf Prange, who captured 48,5 percent. NDR Niedersachsen reported that voter turnout for the decisive vote stood at 44,4 percent, with roughly 25,000 postal ballots cast out of approximately 30,500 requested.

A Close Runoff Contest Following a Tight First Round

The preliminary final result confirmed a margin that remained tense throughout the counting process. Both candidates entered the runoff as favorites after leading the initial ballot on September 13, 2026. In that first round, Ulf Prange collected 33,2 percent of the votes, while Jascha Rohr followed close behind with 30,5 percent.

Because neither contender reached the mandatory 50 percent threshold during the initial election, the race proceeded to the September runoff. Seven additional candidates also competed in the initial field of nine, drawing a total turnout of roughly 86,000 voters out of approximately 136,000 eligible residents. That first-round participation rate reached about 64 percent, marking roughly a ten percent increase compared to the previous municipal election.

Rohr Outlines Budget Priorities and Addresses the Stadium Debate

Speaking to NDR Niedersachsen after his victory, Rohr expressed satisfaction with his campaign. I feel great, I had a great team in the campaign, Rohr stated, adding that the intense work over the final two weeks paid off.

The newly elected mayor emphasized that addressing municipal finances remains his immediate priority upon taking office. The budget is in preparation, and the budget must be passed relatively quickly by the new council, and I think we need a good process there, Rohr said.

When questioned about the planned stadium construction project in Oldenburg, Rohr asserted that the election served as a referendum on the development. He noted that public frustration over the initiative is immense. Despite that sentiment, Rohr stated that he does not see current council majorities possessing the inclination to scrap the project.

Transitioning After Twelve Years Under Krogmann

Rohr succeeds incumbent Mayor Jürgen Krogmann, an SPD politician who served in the post for twelve years. Reflecting on his departure, Krogmann admitted to feeling slight nostalgia on the first election night, telling NDR Niedersachsen that very few positions match the role of leading Oldenburg.

I certainly could have done another two, three years — I am also still fit, Krogmann said regarding his departure, while stressing the importance of accepting that all tenures reach a conclusion. Krogmann announced last year that he would not seek another eight-year term, prompting a record nine candidates to vie for his succession.
