Jasmine Paolini Leads Italy to Billie Jean King Cup Victory: 2024 Tennis Highlights
Italian Tennis Shines in 2024
2024 has been a remarkable year for Italian tennis, especially for Jasmine Paolini. She wrapped up the best season of her life by winning the crucial match in the Billie Jean King Cup Finals against Slovakia, giving Italy its first title in 11 years.
During 2024, Paolini achieved several milestones. She won her first WTA 1000 singles event at the Dubai Tennis Championships, took home two WTA 1000 doubles titles, clinched Olympic doubles gold, and reached three Grand Slam finals—two in singles and one in doubles. As a result, she climbed to a career-high No. 4 in singles, tying the highest ranking ever for an Italian woman, and reached No. 9 in doubles.
“I’m really happy,” Paolini said. “Last year, we lost in the final; this year, we won the title and it’s amazing.” She expressed joy at the end of the tournament, highlighting the difficulty of competing in a long event.
The Billie Jean King Cup, previously known as the Fed Cup, is an international women’s team competition. Italy advanced to the finals after defeating Japan in the quarterfinals and Poland in the semifinals.
In the final, Italy secured a 2-0 victory over Slovakia. Lucia Bronzetti won her match against Viktória Hrunčáková, and Paolini followed with a decisive 6-2, 6-1 win against Rebecca Šramková. This victory healed the disappointment of losing to Canada in the previous year’s final.
Much of Paolini’s success in 2024 came in doubles, and she partnered with veteran Sara Errani. Errani, who has spent 22 years on tour, is a seasoned player known for her doubles skills. She has achieved many successes, including winning all four Grand Slam titles and Olympic gold.
This victory marks Errani’s fourth Billie Jean King Cup title and her first in 11 years. Her experience contributed significantly to the team’s success, not only in this competition but also at the Paris Olympics.
In 2024, Paolini and Errani have been undefeated while representing Italy. Errani shared her excitement, saying, “It’s amazing. It’s been a great week, I’m really proud. We had a lot of fun, we played good tennis.”
Their victory reflects a strong team spirit and dedication, making it a celebrated moment in Italian tennis history.
