Javier Jiménez, the current mayor of San Sebastián, recently discussed his future in politics following the recent elections. He stated, “Warriors do not die in battle. They may be battered, injured, or scraped. But these experiences give us the awards to continue.” He confirmed that he is not retiring from party politics.

Despite his strong commitment, Jiménez believes it is premature to discuss future candidacies right now. He clarified that if he had not been a candidate for governor with Proyecto Dignidad (PD), he would not have sought re-election as mayor.

In the recent elections, Jiménez received 76,260 votes, accounting for 6.71% of the total. For over 20 years, he led San Sebastián as a member of the New Progressive Party (PNP) before leaving it in September 2023.

Jiménez expressed his intention to remain active regardless of his political position, stating, “The ideals do not die after an election. They stay with you forever.” He plans to step down as president of PD next month, as he only holds the position temporarily due to his candidacy for governor.

How does Javier Jiménez plan to engage with his community after stepping down as president of Proyecto Dignidad?

Interview with Javier Jiménez: Reflecting on a Political Journey and Future Aspirations

NewsDirectory3: We are joined today by Javier Jiménez, the current mayor of San Sebastián, who recently shared his thoughts on the recent elections and his future in politics. Thank you for your time, Mr. Jiménez.

Jiménez: Thank you for having me.

NewsDirectory3: You received 76,260 votes in the recent elections, representing 6.71% of the total. Considering that statistic, what are your thoughts on your political future?

Jiménez: It’s important to remember that in politics, warriors do not die in battle. We may be battered, injured, or scraped, but those experiences give us the strength and motivation to continue fighting for our ideals. As for my future, I believe it’s premature to discuss candidacies right now.

NewsDirectory3: You mentioned that had you not been a candidate for governor with Proyecto Dignidad, you wouldn’t have sought re-election as mayor. Can you elaborate on that?

Jiménez: Absolutely. My decision to run for governor reflected my commitment to the principles of Proyecto Dignidad. However, my focus has always been broader than just holding office. My priority is to address the issues facing our community and support positive initiatives, regardless of my political position.

NewsDirectory3: You spent over 20 years with the New Progressive Party before leaving this past September. What prompted this change?

Jiménez: The decision to step away from the PNP was not easy, but I felt it was time for a shift that aligned more closely with my convictions. My political journey has always been about pursuing ideals and fighting for the community rather than pursuing personal gain.

NewsDirectory3: As you prepare to step down as president of Proyecto Dignidad next month, what do you hope to accomplish moving forward?

Jiménez: My goal is to remain active in politics and continue advocating for the principles I believe in. While stepping down from my leadership role, my commitment to Puerto Rico and its people remains steadfast. I want to support positive initiatives and address issues that I believe harm our public.

NewsDirectory3: Reflecting on your two decades as mayor, is there anything you wish you had approached differently?

Jiménez: Without a doubt, I wish I had spent more time with my family. The demands of public office can often overshadow personal relationships, and I’ve learned that cherishing those connections is vital in both good and bad times. Family is everything.

NewsDirectory3: what message would you like to convey to your constituents and fellow politicians?

Jiménez: The ideals we fight for do not fade after an election; they stay with us forever. I encourage everyone in politics to engage with their communities, listen to their needs, and have the courage to advocate for the change we all want to see in Puerto Rico.

NewsDirectory3: Thank you, Javier Jiménez, for sharing your thoughts and experiences with us today. We appreciate your dedication to public service and the community.

In his reflection about his political career, Jiménez noted he has never pursued public office for personal gain, but rather driven by ideals and convictions. He indicated he will not run for mayor again but will stay engaged in political matters and continue advocating for his beliefs.

When asked what he wished he had done differently in his two decades as mayor, he expressed a desire to spend more time with his family. He advised others in politics to cherish family relationships, as they are vital in both good and bad times.

Jiménez’s commitment to Puerto Rico remains strong, as he aims to support positive initiatives while addressing issues he believes harm the public.
