Javier Mascherano Steps Down as Inter Miami Manager

Javier Mascherano has resigned as the head coach of Inter Miami CF, effective April 14, 2026. The departure comes four months after Mascherano led the club to an MLS Cup title and a record-breaking 2025 season.

The club confirmed that Mascherano is stepping down for personal reasons. Along with the head coach, Inter Miami CF announced that Mascherano’s entire coaching staff has also left the organization, though the club provided no specific details regarding the staff’s departure.

I want to let everyone know that, for personal reasons, I have decided to end my tenure as head coach of Inter Miami CF. I will always carry with me the memory of our first star, and wherever I am, I will continue to wish the club all the best.

Guillermo Hoyos Appointed as Successor

Inter Miami CF has appointed Guillermo Hoyos as the manager with immediate effect. Hoyos previously served as the club’s sporting director and is a former coach of Barcelona B.

Hoyos maintains a significant historical connection with Inter Miami star Lionel Messi. He is credited with discovering Messi at the Barcelona academy and predicting his future success when the player was 16 years old. Messi has described Hoyos in interviews as his futbol dad.

Mascherano also shared a long history with the current squad, having played alongside both Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez during his tenure at Barcelona.

Team Performance and Standings

Hoyos inherits a team that currently sits third in the MLS Eastern Conference table. After seven matches, Inter Miami holds a record of three wins, one loss, and three draws.

The club’s most recent result was a 2-2 draw against the New York Red Bulls. While the team remains competitive in league play, they struggled in the CONCACAF Champions Cup earlier in 2026. Reports indicate the club had made several roster changes specifically to contend for that trophy, but the team ultimately fell short in the competition.

The managerial change occurs less than two weeks after Inter Miami opened a new stadium located near Miami International Airport. The club played its first two matches at the new facility, resulting in two draws.
