The JAX Creative District in Riyadh, formerly an industrial area, is now a vibrant hub for artists and creatives. This transformation began in 2015 when a group led by artist Ahmed Mater aimed to create a space for creativity and cultural expression. The district sits along the banks of Wadi Hanifa, Central Arabia’s fertile valley.
The district hosts events such as the Diriyah Biennale and provides subsidized studios and workspaces for artists, designers, and makers. BRICKLAB was commissioned in 2021 to create public space guidelines and later won a competition for designing warehouses and plazas.
JAX emphasizes rehabilitation and adaptive reuse of existing buildings. The design incorporates local materials and mindful landscaping, reflecting the surrounding natural environment. New pedestrian pathways and public spaces were created to encourage community engagement.
