Updated June 21, 2025
Perry, Iowa, is set to receive a significant economic boost with JBS USA planning to construct a $135 million sausage production facility. The Iowa Economic Development Authority (IEDA) has approved more than $12 million in state assistance to support the project, which is projected to create over 300 jobs in the area. The new JBS USA food facility will play a key role in the local economy.
The IEDA board approved $9.45 million in investment tax credits and $2.6 million in sales and use tax credits for JBS USA Food Co. The company plans to build a 150,000-square-foot facility in Perry, a year after the Tyson plant closure impacted the community.
According to IEDA documents, JBS USA processes and packages fresh sausage under various brands, operating in 15 countries and providing products to over 100 countries. The company employs more than 150,000 people worldwide.
The company plans to create 250 jobs within the first three years of operation, with an additional 70 jobs to follow. Fifty-seven of these positions will pay $31.10 per hour. The city of Perry will also contribute a 10-year tax increment finance rebate valued at $10 million.
Construction is expected to begin before the end of the year, with completion targeted for November 2026. JBS USA already operates several other facilities in Iowa, including locations in Council Bluffs, Marshalltown, Oakville, and Ottumwa.
Perry City Administrator Sven Peterson called the JBS proclamation a welcome development for the community of about 8,000 people northwest of Des Moines. “If you would have asked me a year ago if I thought that something like this would be possible within a year of the Tyson closure, I would have told you that you were absolutely insane,” Peterson said.
IEDA Director Debi Durham praised perry’s leadership and expressed confidence in JBS as a corporate partner.”You have a really good partner with JBS and we also made it very clear that we expect them to be very good corporate citizens, and we’ve seen that in other places,” Durham said. “they’re very excited to be in your community.”
Gov. Kim Reynolds hailed the JBS announcement as ”tremendous news for Perry and the entire state of Iowa.” She added, ”At a time when Perry has faced real challenges, this investment brings renewed hope and opportunity for the hardworking families who call this community home.”
