JD Logistics announced plans on September 9 to procure 3 million robots, 1 million unmanned vehicles, and 100,000 drones over the next five years to fully automate its logistics operations, according to reports from de.wedoany.com. The initiative aims to drive complete process automation across the company’s supply chain network while building the world’s largest robotics maintenance and servicing network.

Global Maintenance Network and Workforce Retraining

Under the five-year deployment strategy, JD Logistics will establish a robotics support network covering more than 100 countries globally. The expansion will create upwards of 100,000 jobs for robotics maintenance engineers, according to de.wedoany.com. To address the displacement of existing personnel, JD Group founder and chairman Liu Qiangdong outlined an internal initiative known as the Phoenix Plan during the APEC China Business Leaders Forum in June. Liu stated that the company aims to transition its 700,000 frontline workers, including couriers, through technical training programs rather than leaving them without work. In future, all deliveries will be handled by robots, couriers will then no longer be needed at all – robots will definitely deliver. But I do not want our 700,000 brothers to be without food and without work, Liu Qiangdong, Founder and Chairman of JD Group (via de.wedoany.com) To implement this transition, JD signed partnership contracts with 120 schools nationwide. JD Logistics officially launched its first frontline employee retraining session on August 20 at the JD Service technical certification training center in Zhuozhou, bringing together couriers, warehouse managers, and quality inspectors from across the country. Employees who complete the certification curriculum are stepping into newly established roles as robotics maintenance engineers.

Alongside the logistics overhaul, JD Retail announced plans to invest ten billion yuan in resources through 2028. The funding aims to help 100 brands achieve independent revenues exceeding a threshold, bringing robotics technology into one million end-user scenarios and reaching ten million users. Through these investments, the company intends to establish itself as the world’s largest robotics retail channel, according to de.wedoany.com.
