U.S. Vice President J.D. The gaffe unfolded as administration officials defended steep new trade penalties against the northern neighbor following the sudden collapse of bilateral trade negotiations.

Trade Negotiations Collapse and Tariff Escalations

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that he was suspending negotiations and ordering negotiators back to Ottawa, stating that U.S. proposals introduced last-minute changes that he deemed unfair, uneconomic, and threatening to Canadian sovereignty. President Donald Trump announced plans on Aug. 24 to raise automobile tariffs on Canada to 50% beginning Jan. 1, 2027. Prime Minister Carney countered that Canada would implement retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods starting Sept. 8, 2026.

Vance’s Maine Remarks and Military Protection Claims

While discussing those policies, the vice president made his controversial remark.

We have to remember, Canada is a state—sorry, Freudian slip, Vance said during the event, as quoted by TIME. That was actually an accident. Following the correction, Vance asserted that Canada has underinvested in its defense capabilities. He claimed that the nation quite literally would get invaded by a foreign country were it not for the umbrella of protection provided by the United States of America, according to TIME’s reporting.

Contrasting Positions on Sovereignty and Annexation Rhetoric

Vance’s slip-up aligns with prior remarks from President Trump, who has frequently referred to Canada as the 51st state and suggested annexation during his second term, per TIME. When TIME asked Trump last year if he was trolling when discussing making Canada a U.S. state, Trump replied, Actually, no, I’m not. In a Truth Social post published on Aug. 24, Trump reiterated his stance, writing that America has been carrying Canada for decades, but no longer! and asserting that Canada could not survive without U.S. financial support.

Prime Minister Carney has firmly rejected annexation proposals and trade terms that diminish national autonomy. At a press conference on Aug. 24, 2026, Carney stated that Canada remains open to talks provided they respect Canadian sovereignty. An attitude at the negotiation table that Canada is a subsidiary of the United States, Carney said, that’s not something we’re going to accept.
