JD Vance Warns UK Risks ‘Dark Path’ of Lost Free Speech
JD Vance and David Lammy Bond Over Fishing and free Speech Debate
US Vice President JD Vance is currently enjoying a visit to the UK, hosted by Shadow Foreign Secretary David Lammy. The pair have found common ground in a shared love of fishing, despite differing views on free speech, and are enjoying a period of cross-party connection.
A Fishing Trip and a Familiar Debate
The unlikely duo spent time fishing together ahead of a meeting to discuss pressing global issues. Vance revealed he had some success, catching a few fish, while Lammy wasn’t so lucky.Vance’s three children also joined in, with each of them managing to reel in a catch – a feat Lammy couldn’t replicate.
The visit comes after a February exchange between Vance and Sir Keir Starmer, where Vance raised concerns about “infringements on free speech” affecting both British and American tech companies. Starmer swiftly countered, asserting the UK’s long-standing commitment to free speech.
Lammy shared a picture of the pair laughing during their fishing trip, describing it as a ”real pleasure” to welcome the Vance family and noting the Vice President offered “fishing tips, Kentucky style”. Vance himself praised Chevening, the grand estate Lammy resides in, saying it “lifts up the human spirit” and thanking the “people of England” for creating such a “gorgeous place for foreigners like me to come and talk about the issues of the day”. He also affirmed his affection for the UK.
Family Life and Cross-Cultural Connection
The visit isn’t solely focused on political discussion. Vance shared heartwarming details about his family’s experience, mentioning his children falling asleep on the floor of the large house and his three-year-old daughter repeatedly asking to meet Lammy’s daughter. This glimpse into family life adds a personal touch to the diplomatic exchange.
The two families are enjoying a two-day stay at Chevening before vance and his family head to the Cotswolds for a summer holiday. This extended visit allows for a more relaxed and genuine connection between the two politicians and their families, fostering a sense of personal rapport beyond the political arena.
