Vikings’ J.J. McCarthy, Justin Jefferson Working to Connect at OTAs
Updated June 8, 2025
EAGAN, Minn. — Minnesota vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy is using the team’s OTAs to develop timing with star receiver Justin Jefferson. An errant pass during a recent practice highlighted the importance of their connection.
The pass, intended for Jefferson on a rapid route to the sideline, sailed out of bounds. While not wildly inaccurate, it underscored the timing challenges between a rookie quarterback and a seasoned receiver.
Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell emphasized the importance of Jefferson attending the voluntary workouts.O’Connell believes early work in June is crucial for ironing out the nuances of the quarterback-receiver relationship, especially with a player of Jefferson’s caliber.

Jefferson acknowledged the workouts are more beneficial for the quarterbacks. “It really doesn’t matter who’s throwing the ball,” Jefferson said. “My job is to catch the ball. so I feel like this is more for the quarterback to see the tempo of the routes.”
Jefferson’s focus on quarterback advancement explains his previous absences from voluntary workouts. He noted that he has played with five different starting quarterbacks in the past two seasons, averaging a league-leading 96.6 receiving yards per game.
O’Connell convinced Jefferson to participate in the voluntary program this year to help McCarthy and backup Sam Howell. The coach also sees Jefferson as a positive influence throughout the Vikings’ facility.
Jefferson, who signed a contract extension last offseason, said attending the OTAs was an easy decision. “it’s definitely critically important to gain a little bit of sight of what the new year is going to look like, and to build that connection with my teammates and especially with my quarterback,” Jefferson stated.”It definitely feels great to be here a little earlier than normal.”
Jefferson’s presence extends beyond the practice field. He attended Minnesota Timberwolves playoff games and hosted a youth camp at the team facility.
His primary focus remains on assisting the quarterbacks. Howell, Brosmer and McCarthy are all benefiting from the reps. McCarthy, who had limited practice time with Jefferson last year due to injury, is gaining valuable experience.
Jefferson joked that he tells the quarterbacks to “just throw it up anywhere and I’m going to go get it.” He also discussed the intricacies of his route running, emphasizing his unique stride length and technique.
“The difference between me and a different receiver is what I put on the top of my routes,” Jefferson explained. “The flavor I have on the tops, the stride length that I have with my routes…the more we’re out here and just having those reps, the better we’re going to be.”
McCarthy acknowledged that he and jefferson are still developing their connection. “We’re not where we want to be,” McCarthy said, “but we’re going to be there when we need to.”
The Vikings are embracing a ”More is Required” mantra this offseason. Jefferson’s commitment to the voluntary workouts reflects that mindset, providing valuable time and effort to build a strong connection with his new quarterback.
