Emma Pawol broke barriers on Saturday, May 25th, becoming the first female umpire in Major League Baseball history. Her debut came during a game between the Miami Marlins and the Atlanta Braves, marking a significant milestone for women in sports and a culmination of years dedicated to honing her skills in the minor leagues and collegiate softball.

A Historic Debut at LoanDepot Park

The atmosphere at LoanDepot Park was charged with anticipation as Pawol prepared to take the field. A crowd of photographers gathered, eager to document the historic moment as the umpires walked onto the field. Pawol was warmly greeted by both Marlins manager Clayton mccullough and Braves bench coach walt Weiss during the exchange of lineups. She then jogged to her position along the first base line, shaking hands with Marlins first base coach Tyler Smarslok before the first pitch.

Pawol, 48, expressed the overwhelming emotion she felt upon receiving the news of her promotion. “It was super emotional to finally be living that phone call that I’d been hoping for and working towards for quite a while, and I just felt super full – I feel like a fully charged battery ready to go,” she said Thursday.

Navigating the Game and Initial Calls

Pawol’s first real test arrived in the third inning when she called Atlanta Braves catcher Sean Murphy safe on a close play. While replays suggested Murphy might have been out, marlins manager Clayton McCullough opted not to challenge the call. This decision highlights the inherent difficulty of umpiring and the split-second judgments required.

Pawol also demonstrated her assertive style, making animated calls throughout the game. After Miami’s Xavier Edwards grounded into a double play in the third inning, Pawol emphatically pumped her fist and lifted her leg as she signaled Edwards out.

The umpire acknowledged the scrutiny surrounding her debut, responding with a warm ovation from the crowd when the video board focused on her between innings. She briefly glanced at her image on the screen, recognizing the importance of the moment.

A Journey through the Minors and Beyond

Pawol’s path to the MLB wasn’t immediate. She began working in the minor leagues in 2016, assigned to the Gulf Coast League. Her dedication and performance led to her being assigned the Triple-A championship game in 2023, and she participated in spring training games in both 2024 and this year.

Before transitioning to baseball, Pawol was a standout athlete in softball. A three-time all-conference selection at Hofstra University, she also served as an NCAA softball umpire from 2010-2016, building a strong foundation in officiating.

Breaking Barriers and Inspiring Future Generations

Pawol’s historic debut arrives nearly three decades after the NBA broke its gender barrier for game officials, and a decade after the NFL hired its first full-time female official. The men’s soccer World Cup followed suit three years ago, hiring a female referee. the NHL, though, has yet to have a woman as an on-ice official.

Pawol’s achievement is a testament to her perseverance and skill, and it’s expected to inspire a new generation of women to pursue careers in sports officiating. Her presence on the field represents a significant step towards greater inclusivity and gender equality in baseball.

What’s Next for Pawol?

Pawol is scheduled to work third base in Saturday night’s second game of the doubleheader. She will then face another challenge on Sunday, calling pitches behind the plate in the final game of the series, placing her squarely in the spotlight. Her continued performance will undoubtedly be closely watched as she continues to make history in Major League Baseball.
