Kupcho Clinches ShopRite LPGA Classic Victory
GALLOWAY, N.J. — Jennifer Kupcho sank an 8-foot birdie putt in light rain Sunday to win the ShopRite LPGA Classic, her first victory in almost three years. Kupcho’s final round of 5-under 66 edged out Ilhee Lee, who finished strong but couldn’t catch Kupcho’s momentum.
Kupcho, a four-time LPGA Tour winner including a major at the Chevron Championship, birdied three of the last five holes at Seaview hotel’s rain-soaked Bay Course. Her 20-foot birdie putt on the 14th gave her the lead, and the final putt on 18 sealed the victory in the 54-hole event. This win marks a meaningful moment in her career, showcasing her resilience and skill in a competitive field.
Lee, who led after 36 holes, struggled early with two bogeys, shooting 39 on the front nine. Despite a strong comeback with five back-nine birdies, including the last two holes, her 68 wasn’t enough to surpass Kupcho. The par-3 17th was shortened to 76 yards due to the heavy rain.
Kupcho finished at 15-under 198, demonstrating focus throughout the tournament. “I really just wasn’t thinking about anything else,” Kupcho said. “I think in my mind I had set on 14 under, so I was really just trying to get to that number. Obviously did a little better.Yeah, just feels really nice.Just kind of stayed in my zone the whole time.”
Lee, age 36, secured her sole LPGA title 12 years ago in the Bahamas, in a tournament shortened to 12 holes due to rain. Having played sparingly in recent years while finishing her college degree and working in finance, she recently returned to golf as a part-time instructor. She entered the ShopRite classic ranked No. 1,426 in the world after getting into the field as a past tournament winner.
“I worked for Financial Forum for 100 days and then got out,” Lee said. “Then I realize, ‘Oh, I’m good at golf.’ So I got to teach golf. I started teaching a little bit,not full time, but I was teaching a little bit and I loved it. I absolutely loved it.” She added,”So as then I was teaching a little bit and playing simultaneously occurring and rehabbing, more treatment on my shoulder and back and ankle. I still have few students waiting for me in LA so I get to see them next week.”
Kupcho’s victory is a welcome change after a challenging start to the year. “It just feels amazing,” Kupcho said. “I think I struggled a lot early in the year and had a lot of tough weeks, a lot of hard conversations, and it feels good.”
She credited momentum from the U.S. Women’s Open for her strong performance. “Me and the U.S. Open sometimes just don’t get along. I think I just carried my ball striking into this week,” Kupcho said. “Hit the ball really well last week, hit it well this week, and just sunk some putts.”
