Jenny Sparks Outrage: Apologizes for Smoking Indoors, But Is It Enough to Address Deeper Cultural Issues
Interview with Harper’s Bazaar USA: Jennie Addresses Indoor Smoking Controversy
Blackpink group member Jennie recently spoke with Harper’s Bazaar USA about the controversy surrounding her indoor smoking. In the interview, Jennie explained the reason behind her apology, stating, “If Korean people think (indoor smoking) is wrong, it’s something that needs to be addressed.”
Harper’s Bazaar published the interview on the 19th, discussing the recent indoor smoking controversy and how it affects Blackpink’s reputation. Jennie shared her thoughts on the matter, saying, “What should I do? If Korean people think it (indoor smoking) is wrong, I have to correct it.” She also acknowledged the cultural and historical context surrounding the issue, stating, “I understand why (people) are angry. It’s a cultural, historical, and contemporary issue,” and “I can’t fight it.”
The controversy began last July when a video titled ‘A Moment in Capri with Jennie’ was released on her personal YouTube channel. In the video, Jennie was seen smoking an electronic cigarette indoors while applying makeup in a waiting room. She was criticized for being rude, as her smoke was directed at the staff.
Jennie’s agency later apologized for her actions, stating, “We sincerely apologize to everyone who felt uncomfortable by Jennie’s actions. Jennie also regrets smoking indoors and harming other staff.”
Foreign media outlets responded to the controversy, with the BBC noting that Korean celebrities are often subject to close scrutiny. The BBC mentioned that Jennie is not the first Korean celebrity to be criticized for smoking indoors, citing EXO’s DO and NCT’s Haechan as examples.
CNN also weighed in on the issue, stating that K-pop stars are under massive public scrutiny. The South China Morning Post (SCMP) added that Korean stars undergo rigorous training before their debut and are often prohibited from smoking, dating, and swearing early in their careers.
