Jeonju Project Announces 5 Works-in-Progress & Lab Selections 2024 | Jeonju International Film Festival

March 7, 2026 Marcus Rodriguez - Entertainment Editor Entertainment

The March 7, 2026 entertainment landscape continues to evolve, with significant developments emerging from the international film festival circuit. The Jeonju International Film Festival, a key incubator for independent cinema, has announced details regarding its industry programs, signaling a commitment to supporting emerging filmmakers and fostering global cinematic collaboration.

Jeonju Cinema Project: A Growing Platform for Independent Voices

The Jeonju Cinema Project (JCP) is solidifying its position as a vital resource for filmmakers seeking funding and development support. Recent announcements detail the selection of projects for both the “Next Edition” pitching competition and the “Work in Progress” program. This year’s JCP: Next Edition received a notable increase in submissions – 97 projects in total (59 Korean and 38 international) – a jump of 39 projects compared to the previous year’s 58. This growth underscores the program’s increasing recognition within the independent film community, even as securing private equity remains a challenge.

The JCP: Next Edition operates similarly to the Venice Biennale College Cinema program, focusing on providing financial backing for lower-budgeted films with the expectation of completion within a year, aiming for a premiere at the subsequent edition of the festival. While this timeline isn’t always met, the program has a proven track record, having supported films like Lois Patiño’s Samsara and Ted Fendt’s Outside Noise, both of which garnered critical acclaim on the festival circuit.

Ten projects are selected as finalists for JCP: Next Edition – a mix of Korean and international submissions – and compete through a pitch evaluation process. The ultimate winning project will receive an investment of up to 50,000,000 KRW (approximately $37,000 USD as of today’s exchange rates) and will have its Asian Premiere at the 27th Jeonju International Film Festival in 2026.

Work in Progress: Supporting Films Through Post-Production

Complementing the Next Edition competition is the “Work in Progress” (WIP) program, a post-production consulting initiative designed to enhance the quality of Korean independent feature films and facilitate their distribution both domestically and internationally. Five projects have been selected for this year’s WIP program, receiving support in the crucial final stages of production.

Industry Response and Festival Dynamics

The Jeonju International Film Festival’s commitment to independent cinema is particularly noteworthy in an era dominated by blockbuster franchises and streaming platform content. The JCP and WIP programs offer a crucial lifeline for filmmakers who may struggle to secure funding through traditional channels. The pitching panel, as observed by one filmmaker attending the 2024 festival, offered a unique glimpse into the “festival-film apparatus,” a process often opaque to those outside the industry. The atmosphere at the pitch forum was described as a blend of a “becalmed game show” and a session at the United Nations, owing to the availability of simultaneous translation.

Each project presenting at the Next Edition pitching panel receives eight minutes to present their concept, followed by a seven-minute question-and-answer session with the jurors. This format provides a rigorous evaluation process, ensuring that the selected projects possess both creative merit and practical feasibility.

Looking Ahead

The announcement of the JCP and WIP selections marks a significant step towards the 27th Jeonju International Film Festival. As the selected projects move forward into production and post-production, the industry will be watching closely to see which films emerge as critical and commercial successes. The Jeonju International Film Festival continues to demonstrate its dedication to nurturing the next generation of filmmakers and championing the art of independent cinema. The festival’s industry programs are not merely about funding films; they are about fostering a vibrant and diverse cinematic ecosystem.

The increased number of submissions to the JCP this year suggests a growing confidence in the program’s ability to deliver tangible results. As the independent film landscape faces ongoing challenges, initiatives like the Jeonju Cinema Project are more important than ever.
