The South Dakota Department of Veterans Affairs is utilizing a new initiative titled Coffee and Camaraderie to strengthen the connection between veterans, their families, and state services. The program is designed to facilitate discussions regarding benefits and provide a forum for addressing the specific challenges encountered by the veteran population.

Jeremiah Schneider, the Secretary of the South Dakota Department of Veterans Affairs, stated that the primary objective of these gatherings is to bridge the gap between the state and those who have served. Schneider noted that while the federal VA is effective at disseminating information, that data can sometimes become lost in translation due to the number of entities involved in the process.

So, I think our goal is to get the changes out to the population, let them know what they’ve earned through their service, as well as their family members, and then bridge that gap to get them the services that they’ve earned.

Demographic and Regional Challenges

The department has identified significant difficulties in reaching a diverse veteran demographic that spans ages from 18 to 100. Schneider explained that the department recognized a gap in knowledge descending from the VA, leading to the decision to provide veterans with a voice and a seat at the table.

Participation levels have varied by region. The department has found it more challenging to secure wide participation in urban centers, specifically citing Sioux Falls and Rapid City. In contrast, the response from rural populations has been described as very good.

The rural populations seem to be, I would say a ‘hidden gem.’ This is a great opportunity for them to get together. They tend to come out, ask amazing questions

These events are conducted in informal settings, which the department believes makes veterans more comfortable when discussing their needs and asking questions.

Event Implementation and Schedule

The Coffee and Camaraderie events serve a dual purpose: allowing the Department of Veterans Affairs to distribute critical information while providing a space for veterans to engage in fellowship and share their personal stories.
