Jeremy Piven and Shira Piven’s 15-Year Journey in ‘The Performance’: A Family Legacy Fulfilled

Jeremy Piven and Shira Piven’s 15-Year Journey in ‘The Performance’: A Family Legacy Fulfilled

Jeremy Piven and his sister, Shira Piven, created the film The Performance. This project took 15 years and reflects their family legacy. It started with their mother, Joyce Hiller Piven, who was inspired by Arthur Miller’s short story about a Jewish American tap dancer before World War II.

Shira shared, “My mother, a theater artist, found this story in The New Yorker and thought it was a great role for Jeremy.” Jeremy recalled his excitement upon reading the story. He considered it a chance to play a significant character, despite not knowing how to tap dance. “I thought it would be incredible, and I didn’t hesitate,” he stated. He worked to secure financing, continuously improving his tap dancing skills until he was ready to perform.

To gain rights for the film, Jeremy approached Arthur Miller’s daughter, Rebecca, in a daunting phone call where he secured the necessary permissions. He faced many challenges over the years while seeking funds. Despite setbacks, he urged others with passion projects to stay committed.

After finally securing financing, Jeremy executed a difficult stunt in the film and ended up breaking eight ribs. “I told my stuntman to stand down and did the stunt myself. We got one take,” he said.

The Performance represents hard work, dedication, and the fulfillment of a family dream.
