Updated June 11, 2025
Aaron Pierre’s performance in the action thriller “Rebel Ridge” not only showcased his talent but also highlighted Netflix’s willingness to take casting risks, according to director Jeremy Saulnier.
Saulnier emphasized Netflix’s unique approach to casting, contrasting it with other studios’ reliance on established stars for foreign sales appeal. He noted that Netflix allowed him greater freedom in choosing actors for both “Hold the Dark” and “Rebel Ridge.”
The journey to bring ”Rebel Ridge” to the screen was fraught with challenges. originally slated to begin filming in April 2020, production was halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Filming eventually started in May 2021 but faced another setback when John Boyega, the original lead, left the project. Pierre’s arrival in April 2022 finally set the stage for a smooth production, leading to the film’s release in September 2024.

Despite the hurdles, “Rebel Ridge” became a critical and commercial success. Saulnier credits netflix’s faith in his vision and their openness to unconventional casting choices for the film’s ultimate triumph.
“Everything ended up — after a very long journey to get this to screen — just perfectly,” Saulnier said. “I don’t know how or why, the fates were in control, but I can tie it back to Netflix’s faith in me as a filmmaker and their willingness to take risks that other studios will not take.”
