Jerez records high temperatures and four heatwaves through summer

Jerez recorded a September temperature average that exceeded normal patterns by 3.1 degrees Celsius, concluding a summer season marked by persistent heat.

The autumn season officially began on Wednesday, lasting for 89 days and 21 hours until the winter solstice on December 21, following a summer that featured four heatwaves and numerous tropical nights where temperatures stayed above 20 degrees Celsius. July started intensely, registering the second-highest average temperature recorded at the La Parra weather station since data collection began in 1952. July’s average reached 28 degrees Celsius, trailing only the 28.3 degrees recorded in 2022. Temperatures peaked on July 31 at 41.8 degrees Celsius, while the lowest temperature for that month was 16.3 degrees Celsius on July 14.

August continued the heat pattern, particularly during the first fortnight before moderating in the final week, where the maximums barely exceeded 30 degrees Celsius. The month concluded with an average temperature of 26.2 degrees Celsius and a single heatwave during its opening days.

September Anomalies and Extended Heat Trends

September typically offers milder conditions in Jerez, but the month brought twelve days with temperatures exceeding 35 degrees Celsius and three days surpassing 40 degrees Celsius. State meteorological agency Aemet notes that September normally features an average temperature of 23.7 degrees Celsius and an average maximum of 30.4 degrees Celsius. Through the first 21 days of September leading up to the autumn transition, the city averaged 26.8 degrees Celsius, standing 3.1 degrees Celsius above the historical norm.

Minimum temperatures throughout the summer remained elevated near 19 degrees Celsius. Historical minimum averages in Jerez remained below 18 degrees Celsius prior to 2023, a threshold that has not recurred over the past three years, with August 2024 surpassing 19 degrees Celsius. The entire estival period for 2026 closed with an average temperature of 27.1 degrees Celsius. High temperatures arrived early in the year, with May recording readings of 33 degrees Celsius starting May 20 and reaching 37 degrees Celsius by May 31, a pattern that repeated in June with a mid-month heatwave exceeding 38 degrees Celsius.
