Memorial Day weekend, the unofficial kickoff to summer, was marred by violence along the Jersey Shore.The Seaside Heights boardwalk was shut down around midnight Sunday by police due to multiple incidents.
Authorities reported responding to at least three stabbings in Seaside Heights over the three-day weekend. The incidents led to over 70 arrests between friday and Monday,with nearly two dozen involving juveniles. The Jersey Shore safety became a primary concern.
Grace Zarrillo, a boardwalk visitor, said, “I’ve been down here the last few days, itS been crazy.We’ve been trying to stay safe. I feel like we’ve just seen people getting into fist fights. We’re staying away from them.”
The violence also impacted local businesses. Frankie Rainey, who works on the boardwalk, noted the early closure resulted in a important loss. “About an hour early we had to shut down, it can hurt us 20-30%. It’s a big weekend for us! But we gotta do what the chief says!” Rainey said.
An estimated 100,000 visitors flocked to the area for the holiday weekend. State Assemblyman Paul Kanitra said he is a co-sponsor of a bill aimed at addressing the ongoing issues at the Jersey Shore boardwalk.
“We’ve been dealing with pop-up parties and brawls since I was mayor. Kids causing trouble. This bill will increase the penalties for that,” Kanitra said.
